Police on Saturday arrested a sharpshooter in connection with murder of East Champaran RTI activist Rajendra Singh on June 19.

Singh (60) was shot dead at Piprakothi while returning on his motorcycle to Rajpur village under Samgrampur police station.

Areraj Deputy Superintendent of Police Ajay Mishra said, “We have arrested sharpshooter Rana Thakur, a resident of Mufassil. He told us he was hired by a former mukhiya, Om Prakash also known as Subhash Yadav, whose malpractices in appointment of contract teachers were exposed by the RTI activist.”

Yadav has been on the run along with the activist’s brother Satendra Singh and nephew Sudhanshu Kumar, also accused in the case. Police are also looking for two former PDS dealers Pramod Singh and Ajay Singh.

Police suspect Singh’s brother and nephew had been used by Singh’s rivals. Singh and his brother had been involved in a dispute over their ancestral property worth more than Rs 2.5 crore.

In the FIR, the activist’s wife alleged that her husband would often say Subhash Yadav, who had been at the receiving end of his RTIs, could get him killed.
