Failure to declare actual weight of ice cream sold to customers

Two premium ice cream outlets in Ernakulam were slapped with fine of ₹24,000 by the central zone of the Legal Metrology Department on Saturday for not declaring the actual weight of the ice cream sold to customers.

R. Ram Mohan, Deputy Controller of the central zone, said that the outlets located in LuLu Mall and Valanjambalam were selling ice creams in quantities mentioned as ‘regular’, ‘large’, and ‘jumbo’. They were also found selling ice cream as single, double or triple scoops without mentioning the actual weight, he said.

The inspections were carried out as part of the complaint redressal initiative of the department. Mr. Mohan said that consumers had the right to know the actual weight of the ice cream. The outlets have been asked to provide ice cream only after ensuring its quantity using a weighing balance. They should also mention the quantity in the bills issued to the consumers, he said.
