CHENNAI: Less than week after police crackdown, motorcycle stunt is back on the streets of Chennai. This time, however, it turned fatal. A college student died and another was seriously injured in an illegal bike race organised by a group of students on the busy Anna Salai stretch on Friday.

“Around 10 men on seven bikes were seen speeding on the Anna Salai without helmets. While trying to overtake a vehicle, one of the bikes brushed against a four-wheeler,” said the police.

The bike lost control and dashed the central median. Two of them flew at least 20 metres away from the spot. Both sustained head injuries and were taken to the Royapettah government hospital in an autorickshaw, almost 20 minutes later,” said the police officer.

Investigations revealed that the men were studying in a private college and were returning after a movie. One of the victims Vikram (20), who was riding pillion, died in the Royapettah hospital while another identified as Yogeshwaran (21) has been admitted in the ICU.

Just six days ago, a special team seized about 17 bikes and arrested owners for speeding along the Koyambedu 100 Feet Road and Ennore highway.  “Most of the bikes seized are in the category of 150cc and above and would be produced before court,” said the police officer.
