Although David Lynch didn’t vote for Donald Trump, he said Trump could go down as one of the greatest — or at least most influential — presidents in U.S. history.

“He could go down as one of the greatest presidents in history because he has disrupted the thing so much. No one is able to counter this guy in an intelligent way.”

While some may quibble with his use of the term “greatest,” Lynch said in a wide-ranging interview with The Guardian that while Trump might not be doing a good job, he’s paving the path for future political outsiders.

“Our so-called leaders can’t take the country forward, can’t get anything done. Like children, they are. Trump has shown all this,” he said.

The acclaimed director of such films as “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive” and creator of the TV series “Twin Peaks” said he voted for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 primary and he thinks he voted for Libertarian Gary Johnson for president, though he’s not really sure.

“I am not really a political person, but I really like the freedom to do what you want to do,” Lynch said.

On other subjects, Lynch said he regrets being an absent father, but his work demanded it. “You gotta be selfish. And it’s a terrible thing. I never really wanted to get married, never really wanted to have children. One thing leads to another and there it is,” he said.
