Tiruchi at 13th position, Chennai at 100

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs released the Swachh Survekshan 2018 ranking for clean cities, featuring 485 cities across the country, on Saturday and four cities from Tamil Nadu are among the top 100. However, no city from the State figures among the top 10.

While Tiruchi has slipped to the 13th position from six last year, Coimbatore has retained the 16th rank. Erode has been ranked 51 against 42 last year and Chennai is ranked 100, an improvement from the 235th position last year. Madurai has been ranked 123, down from the previous year’s 57.

Tiruchi had a total score of 3,352, Coimbatore 3,292 and Chennai 2,586.

According to the data released, Chennai’s ranking improved primarily because of better feedback from residents using the Swachhata App, with the city scoring 972 out of 1,400. However, the city did not perform well in service-level progress, scoring just 699 out of 1,400. The team of officials sent by the Central government gave a score of 915 on direct observation of the conservancy operations and sanitation in various parts of the city.

Tiruchi, the top ranking city in the State, performed well in citizen feedback with a score of 1,250 out of 1,400.
