FIFA World Cup: Day eleven, live scores, results, highlights

Goal! England 1 Panama 0

8 mins - While all eyes are on Kane, who is being manhandled in the box, Keiran Trippier whips in a corner to an unmarked John Stones. The Manchester City centre-back nods home from eight yards. Another set-piece goal for England.

What a start for the Three Lions!

Panama create a decent chance

5 mins - The ball is worked to Edgar Barcenas, who slips in Anibal Godoy, who has more time than he realises. He should have taken another touch before working Jordan Pickford. Instead he panics and balloons a shot high over the bar.

And we're off...

2 mins - England, in their white home kit are immediately on the offensive. New boy Loftus-Cheek cuts the ball back to Lingard on the edge of the area. His touch is a little heavy and Panama clear. Moments later Gabriel Gomez elbow crashes into Jesse Lingard’s face as they jump for a loose ball. Lingard is attended to by the England physios.

The national anthems ring out

If there was a competition for passionate renderings at this tournament, the Panama team would probably nudge it. And their supporters, for that matter...

So, is football really coming home?

Hard to say. England looked like they were running out of ideas against Tunisia, before the talismanic Harry Kane popped up at the death to pull his side out of the fire and propel England to a vital three points.

Their one major change tonight is the imposing Ruben Loftus-Cheek coming in for an injured Dele Alli.

As for Panama, they are the reason words like 'plucky' exist. Five yellow cards against Belgium tells its own story. They are dogged, determined and - for no better reason than to complete an alliterative trifecta - doughty. But they are also severely limited when it comes to football at this level. They remain unchanged from the team that was gubbed 3-0 by Belgium.

It seems coach Gareth Southgate was engaging in a bit of bluff, with the press 'leaking' of their line-up tonight. Canny from the England coach, if that is the case.

If England want to be taken seriously as a contender to go deep into the tournament, they need to put the Central Americans to the sword tonight.

Much depends on whether they can get an early goal. Else they will be ploughing a frustrating furrow for much of the evening. They need to use the wings, as it's going to be packed down the middle.

Let's see how things unfold in the sweltering heat of Nizhny Novgorod...

But we begin with England v Panama

Here are the teams:

Hello and welcome

We have another evening of tantalising fixtures ahead of us tonight. First up it's England v Panama, then Japan v Senegal followed by Colombia v Poland. So much at stake and a number of teams already in the last-chance saloon.
