HYDERABAD: Putting an end to a two-week long dry spell, the city received 6.39cm rainfall between 8.30am on Friday and 8.30am on Saturday — the third highest 24-hour rainfall recorded in Hyderabad, in June, over the the last decade.

The all-time highest rainfall that it received over a 24-hour span, during this month, is 12.27cm, recorded on June 26, 1914.

According to figures released by the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), Qutbullapur received the highest rainfall of 6.95cm followed by Begumpet

(6.45cm), Moulali (5.90cm) and Monda Market (5.40cm). Other areas such as Serilingampally, Srinagar Colony, Tirmugherry and Shapur Nagar too received up to five cm rainfall in 24 hours.

Officials attributed the sudden downpour to the revival of monsoon due to thunderstorm activity. “The thunderstorm activity was active over Telangana resulting in heavy rainfall in majority districts. From June 26, we expect the intensity of rainfall to increase further as the cyclonic pressure is advancing towards south India,” said Raja Rao, meteorologist, Indian Meteorological Department, Hyderabad that has issued a thunderstorm and heavy rainfall warning for June 24 and June 26. It also pointed out how the southwest monsoon has been “vigorous” over Telangana.

“Further rainfall is expected to increase over northern parts of Telangana and north Andhra Pradesh coast during next 24 hours. Along with this, moderate winds are also expected to prevail over the region. Mainly cloudy sky and drop in temperatures is expected. Moreover, rainfall will continue over the area for the coming two to three days,” read a weather report issued by Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency.

In districts too, Narsapur in Medak received highest rainfall of 16.73cm followed by Nallapalle in Sangareddy (11.18cm) and Nalgonda (11.03cm). According to TSDPS figures, Adilabad district received highest seasonal rainfall of 18.32cm from June 1 to June 23.
