Alma Public Schools will put money earned from recent property sales toward future capital improvements.

The school district made about $75,000 combined, after fees, from the sales of the property that the Alma PAL Strikers Soccer Club uses for its games, and the property housing the former Republic School building for approximately $16,500, said Mark Jacobs, the district’s finance director. The Republic School building was sold in the fall.

The sale of 12.98 acres to Avalon Tahoe was for $65,000, Jacobs said.

Century 21 - the district’s realtor - helped sell the property for that price, which was the first price offered.

“They needed more space to park their pontoon boats,” he said.

The sale will not be final until early July.

Talks between the school district and Avalon Tahoe had been ongoing for some time, Jacobs said.

The sale was approved at the board’s June 11 meeting by a 6-0 vote; board member Mike Bishop was not present for the meeting.

Used for soccer games, the property will still be used for that purpose for the next two years because it won’t be developed until then, he said.

“They may use part of it right away; the part that doesn’t have soccer fields on it,” Jacobs said.

The property is not connected to any other property owned by the district.

Also at that meeting, the board approved by a 6-0 vote to appoint Brent Clark as the district’s new maintenance director, replacing Mick Koutz, who retired earlier this year. Clark starts in the position on July 1.

The board will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the superintendent’s conference room at Alma High School to discuss its fiscal year 2018-19 budget, which has to be completed and finalized before June 30.

Its next regular meeting is at 7 p.m. on July 9 in the multipurpose room at Donald L. Pavlik Middle School at 1700 Pine Ave. with a work session preceding it at 6 p.m.
