Exhorting students to get out of their comfort zone, which would be a key to achieve success, S. Chandrasekaran SERB Distinguished Fellow, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, touched upon the importance of cultivating good traits such as creativity, originality, cooperation, humility and honesty.

Speaking at the 35th Graduation Day at Thiagarajar College here on Saturday, he said good qualities in a fresh graduate would be the guiding factor in the journey of one’s life to be triumphant. Quoting Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken, he underscored the fact that perseverance would be an essential source to emerge as an eminent scientist and urged the graduates with a famous quote of Steve Jobs to “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.”

College president Karumuttu T Kannan said that one ought to be a learner throughout life. Emphasising the fact that learning should begin from one’s mistakes, he appealed to the fresh graduates to build self-confidence coupled with strong determination and grab opportunities.

College secretary Karumuttu K. Thiagarajan said that the 1,274 graduating students included 794 UG students, 266 PG students and 214 M.Phil students. Principal D. Pandiaraja, heads of departments, parents and vice-president Uma Kannan participated.

Toppers from the Business Administration, Commerce and Mathematics departments told reporters that the faculty were instrumental in shaping them. Some of them who had been selected in the placement drive thanked the management for imparting them special training on how to appear for interviews.
