The crash happened near the intersection of State Highway 2 and Steen Rd, in Waitakaruru.
One person is dead after a two-car crash in Waikato.
Five people were involved in the crash. One person in a serious condition and three others have suffered moderate injuries.
Emergency services were alerted at 11am on Sunday to a crash at Waitakarūrū, east of Thames.
The crash happened near the intersection of State Highway 2 and Steen Rd trapping some of the occupants, said Waikato police Senior Sergeant Charles Burgess.
"I can confirm one person has died," Burgess said.
Police, Fire and Ambulance services were at the scene. A helicopter was also called.
Diversions are in place and motorists are asked to delay travel in the area if possible and heavy vehicles will need to take extra care and time on the detour.
"As you can imagine, with SH2, we are trying to deal with quite a lot of traffic congestion," Burgess said.
Coromandel-bound traffic will detour at Mangatawhiri Road and head through Miranda Road while traffic heading towards Auckland on SH 2 will need to turn off at SH25 and go through Front Miranda Road.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
