district administration on Saturday opened a library cum reading room at the Red Cross Bhawan for the underprivileged students of government school to ensure their proper mental development. The library has been equipped with 2000 books for the young bibliophiles apart from bean bags. Deputy Commissioner
Bathinda Diprava Lakra and Additional Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney, who took the initiative interacted with the students and inquired about their choice of books.
Lakra said that 305 such libraries will be set up at all villages and towns of the district in phased manner. The library at Red Cross Bhawan has been started with around 2000 books worth Rs 2 lakh.
Students of school for underprivileged Prayaas School and Appu Society engrossed in the colorful books in Punjabi,
Hindi and English as they evinced keen interest in books. Daughter of labourer couple Priyanka of class III said that “she is excited to see large number of books which are not available in our school. I will here whenever got time”. Some of the books have been procured online, some bought from other states and remaining from the local market.
Students of the government schools will have free access to the library wherein they would not be allowed to take the books home. Students of private school will have access to it after paying nominal fees. The teaching alphabets in Punjabi, Hindi and English, counting and picture recognition books have been kept at library, besides books of story collections, encyclopedia and of famous authors have also been procured.
