The Sholavaram police have arrested four persons on charges of assaulting two policemen and a home guard who went to interrogate a man, who was allegedly involved in a red sanders smuggling case, on Thursday night.
According to the police, Arivuchelvan, a policeman attached to the communal intelligence wing, Muthukrishnan, from the Esplanade police station; and Perumal, a home guard attached to the Korrukupet police station, went to Sholavaram to meet Kabir, residing in Nagathamman Nagar.
Kabir was allegedly involved in smuggling cases earlier. Around 8 p.m., they went to the location in a sedan.
As Kabir was not there, they were questioning Karthiravan, 27.
During the course of the interrogation, Shanmugham, Krishnamurthy, Muniyandi and Nagendran Kumar started assaulting the policemen. They sustained injuries on the head and face.
The four were arrested and further investigation is on.
There was some confusion over why a policeman attached to the Intelligence section went to Sholavaram, along with a constable from the Esplanade police station and a home guard, in a private car and not a police vehicle.
A senior police officer from Tiruvallur said they had asked for a report from the city police on why the policemen came to Sholavaram.
“We are checking if they had come officially or for some other purpose,” said the officer.
