2-alarm fire sends elderly woman to hospital in critical condition, Toronto fire say

Toronto police say a woman has been taken to hospital in critical condition after a 2-alarm fire broke out Saturday.

Police said they received a call around 2:40 p.m. to 111 D’Arcy Street in the area of Spadina Avenue and Dundas Street West with reports of a fire.

Officers said witnesses reported black smoke coming from the second floor of a residential townhouse.

Jim Jessop, deputy chief for Toronto Fire, told Global News they found a person inside the building without vital signs while battling the fire.

Jessop said when crews arrived there was heavy flame and smoke coming from the building.

“They made quick entry, initiated a quick primary search where we located an elderly female. She was rescued and removed from the second floor via ladders with the firefighters,” he said.

He said paramedics were on scene and immediately began performing CPR on the victim.

Paramedics transported the woman to a local trauma centre in critical condition. By 6 p.m. Saturday evening there as no update on her condition.

Toronto fire investigation division is now on scene investigating the cause of the fire.
