A 30-year-old man hanged himself after killing a woman and her mother near Polur in Tiruvannamalai district on Friday night. The family had rejected his marriage proposal.
The names of the dead were given as S. Nirmala, 24, and her mother Chamundeswari, 44. Niramala’s father Sivaraman, 55, who was attacked with a blunt object, has been admitted to a hospital.
The police said they were residing in the Kalikapuram, near Polur.
Nirmala was pursuing postgraduation in the Government Arts College and was staying in a hostel. She used to visit her parents on the weekends. Anbalagan, 30, a resident of the same village, was working as a lorry driver. He had been supporting Nirmala’s family for years and wanted to marry her, but the family did not make any commitment as she was studying.
Monetary support
Desperate to marry Nirmala, Anbalagan continued extending monetary support. Recently, he went with his brother to hold talks on marriage, but the family openly rejected the proposal.
Angered over the rejection, he quarrelled with the parents of Nirmala and hatched a plan to kill the family, the police said.
On Friday night, he went to their house and attacked Sivaraman, who was sleeping in the front yard of the house. He entered the house and smothered Nirmala and Chamundeswari using a pillow. He then hanged himself from the ceiling using a rope. Neighbours who heard a noise went to the house and found Sivaraman battling for life. They rushed him to the Government General Hospital, Vellore.
Deputy Superintendent of Police V.E. Senthil Kumar told The Hindu, “Our initial investigation revealed that he supported the family for years. As the family rejected his marriage proposal, he decided to kill them. Further investigation is on.”
