Police not taking action against accused, says Salma Begum

A day after a man was assaulted allegedly by his in-laws for marrying their daughter at Jewargi taluk in Kalaburagi district, his wife on Thursday demanded the arrest of all the accused.

Speaking to journalists, Salma Begum said though her family were booked under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act) for assaulting her husband Manjunath Gaikwad, the accused were moving around freely.

She alleged that because of some political pressure, the police were not taking any action against the accused.

A case has been registered against her father Mohammad Chaus, her mother Naseema Begum, younger brother Syed Ali and his four friends.

Salma Begum and Manjunath Gaikwad got married at Mannaekhelli in Humnabad taluk of Bidar district in August last year after her parents opposed their relationship as Manjunath belongs to Dalit community.

“After marriage, we left Jewargi town and settled in Kalaburagi city as we were facing death threats by our family members,” she said.

On Tuesday, when Manjunath had gone to Jewargi town for some work, Salma’s family attacked him with wooden sticks at the office he was working earlier.
