PUNE: A 59-year-old retired engineer of an automobile company was run over on Friday afternoon by a speeding ambulance of Maharashtra Emergency Medical Services near Sassoon General Hospital.

The Bund Garden police identified the deceased as Ajit Laxman Rane of Vimannagar. The police have registered an offence against the ambulance driver.

Sub-inspector Tushar Pachpute of the Bund Garden police said Rane retired from the automobile company recently and was working on contract. “On Friday morning, he had gone to the Provident Fund’s office near Golibar Maidan,” Pachpute said.

After finishing work, Rane reached near Sassoon General Hospital around 1pm. He wanted to cross the road between the hospital and the central building.

“Rane was at the backside of a bus parked along the road. When he was on the middle of the road, a speeding ambulance was heading towards Sassoon General Hospital,” Pachpute said.

Pachpute said the ambulance hit Rane before its driver could realize someone was crossing the road. “Rane suffered severe head injuries. He was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead,” the sub-inspector said.

He said the ambulance was also carrying a serious patient. “The patient was being taken to the Sassoon General Hospital from Kalepadal in Hadapsar. We have booked the driver for rash driving and causing death because of negligence,” Pachpute said.
