Car parked in cellar where he slept caught in rainwater

A 25-year-old man met a watery grave after the car he slept inside got submerged in rain water in the cellar of a building at Kukatpally on Saturday.

The drenched body of Bhosle Gopinath was found by firemen and the building security guard in the morning after they pumped out water from the cellar.

Kukatpally police said that the victim, a resident of Jawaharnagar, was working as security guard at a residential complex in Khajaguda and came to Kukatpally to meet Naveen Kumar, an ex-serviceman, who earlier worked at a security agency here.

“Gopinath entered into a heated argument with another guard at Khajaguda and refused to sleep there and came to Kukatpally,” said K Sangiah, head constable, Kukatpally.

Around 12 a.m., he met Kumar, who told him to sleep in the vehicle which was parked in the cellar. “Due to heavy rain in the night, the apartment cellar was filled with water up to five feet and Gopinath, who was reportedly in an inebriated condition, got submerged as the car he was sleeping in got inundated ,” he said.

The police said that the building security guard, Srinu, with his wife and children saved their lives and was not aware of the victim’s presence inside the vehicle.

Around 5 a.m., the residents alerted the police, who rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Gandhi Hospital for autopsy. GHMC officials, however, said that no action is being initiated against the building authorities as the victim was in a drunken state and there was no negligence on anyone’s part.
