Ghatkopar mechanic was arrested for car thefts across Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai and seven stolen vehicles were seized from him by the anti-extortion cell. Police said the cars were totally worth around Rs 40 lakh.
Inayatullah Shah (31) would purchase scrapped cars involved in accidents from insurance agents and use their number plates and other details on other cars of the same make which used to be stolen from streets, senior inspector Pradeep Sharma said.
Police said they stumbled upon the mechanic while probing a vehicle theft case with Naupada police. Based on a tip-off, officials led by inspectors Rajkumar Kothmire and Vikas Ghodke, sub-inspector Hemant Dhole and others, laid a trap and arrested Shah from Naupada.
"We are trying to find out others who may have aided him in running the racket, and also his involvement in the other car theft racket," said the officer. -Nishikant Karlikar
