US President Donald Trump has extended sanctions on North Korea for one year, saying the country still posed an extraordinary threat. The sanctions were originally introduced under an executive order in 2008.
After his talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12, Mr Trump had said that sanctions on Pyongyang would not be lifted until further progress was made on its denuclearization. However, on June 13, he also tweeted that, there is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea.
President Trump yesterday renewed the sanctions due to, what he called, the existence and risk of proliferation of weapons-usable fissile material on the Korean Peninsula and the actions and policies of the Government of North Korea.
He said in a notice to the Congress that these continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.
