MOHALI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) recovered gold worth Rs 57.17 lakh from the possession of two passengers travelling in Bangkok flight at Chandigarh international airport on Friday. The two passengers had concealed the gold weighing 1.984 kg in their rectum in the form of gold biscuits.
They have been identified as Rajesh Mahindroo, a resident of Amritsar and Rohit Soni, a resident of Delhi. DRI sources said that 26 biscuits weighing 76.3 grams each of gold, were recovered from their possession.

Sources in DRI said the department had specific information about the man travelling with illegal gold and after disembarking from the Bangkok flight, DRI sleuths detained the two. On searching them, 12 biscuits weighing 76.3 grams were recovered from Rajesh and 14 biscuits from Rohit.

Sources in DRI said the accused had to be taken to washroom and were asked to drink water to get the biscuits wrapped tightly in polythene cover. They had probably inserted the pouches inside their rectum during the flight as it approached for landing at Chandigarh, said sources.

Both were arrested and later released on bail, said sources in DRI. They claimed they were carriers and were paid Rs 7,000, said sources.
