Johnny Depp has not so much suffered an annus horribilis as an ever-worsening decline in a career that, for a decade or so, was among the most glimmering of his generation. Entrapped by convoluted, embittered legal wrangles over his precarious finances with his management company, Depp has been portrayed as a man lonely and deranged by a Rolling Stone interview arranged to clear his name.

Instead, however, Hollywood's studio executives are worried about the welfare of the $30 million-a-movie actor who conducted the interview solely from dusk to dawn while "dressed in his pirate-homeless attire".
