As Bianka and Vern Landavazo await the trial of the man accused of murdering their 13-year-old daughter nearly two years ago, they hope a statue they plan to unveil Saturday will help other grieving parents.
"These two people went through the most unimaginable loss and through their loss a dream began," Debbie James wrote on social media, tagging the parents of Lauren Landavazo. "To build a place for any parent to go and find peace and heal.
"I don't think any of us who have lost a child could ever imagine the depths of healing that would happen nor could we imagine how big and beautiful this journey would be. They put us together to help bring this to life and it has been my privileged to share this with them."
Lauren was shot and killed walking home from McNiel Middle School on Sept. 2, 2016. Makayla Smith, also 13, was shot as well walking with Lauren.
"The healing has begun and it has touched our hearts," Bianka responded to the James' post. "It has been an emotional journey, but beautiful. We are blessed to have met so many wonderful people including yourself."
"That's one of the things that surprised us. It's been healing even before the angel ever arrived," Vern told the Times Record News Friday. "It was the healing we never thought we'd find, even just through the process of the project."
Bianka was quick to thank everyone who helped bring the Angel of Hope statue to Wichita Falls.
"There are so many people involved in this project," Bianka posted to social media. "It's been incredible!! Vern and I never imagined it would evolve to what is right now!"
The mother called it an "army of angels" who helped ensure the spot for parents and families grieving the loss of a child to come. The site has several benches, as well as flowers and plants that will be lit up at night.
Throughout the project, Bianka and Vern said they met other parents who were grieving the loss of their own children. Several of those parents began helping work on the site, including a father who lost his son 16 months ago.
"The dedication, passion and love he has for our Angel of Hope site," Bianka wrote in another post on social media. "This journey to get our WF (Wichita Falls) angel has been healing for so many, what we can ALL accomplish together, even when it seemed impossible!!
"I am so proud of everyone who has been a part of this project!! Let the healing continue and may we love and support one another."
Many of the parents and community members around Wichita Falls began to pitch in what they could – whether it was time, money or services to help the site become what it is today, "far bigger than we ever could have imagined," Bianka told the TRN.
The Christmas Box Angel statue, which is what the Angel of Hope in Wichita Falls is modeled after, was introduced to the world in the book "The Christmas Box," according to the website for the statue.
The book, "a worldwide bestseller and hit television movie" by author Richard Paul Evans, featured a woman mourns the loss of her child at the base of an angel monument.
Since the first unveiling of a statue, over 120 have been made around the world.
