Police have been involved in a chase where a man fled in a car with a baby on board.

A police media spokeswoman said after a short pursuit, police stopped the 26-year-old man's car in Plimmerton, near Porirua, to find a baby in his car.  

Police were called to a family harm incident in Cannons Creek on Friday, just after 9am. 

"As we arrived at the property the man was leaving, and he wouldn't stop for us."

Police stopped the car in Plimmerton, about a 10-minute drive away, she said. 

"There was a baby in the car, which we have returned to its home in Cannons Creek." 

The man was arrested for failing to stop, for dangerous driving, and has also been issued a police safety order in relation to the family harm incident, she said.
