Incident happened while victim was on the way to a bank

Three persons allegedly impersonated Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers to cheat a salesman and walked away with ₹19 lakh on Wednesday under the guise of a ‘surprise raid’, the police said on Thursday.

They said the incident took place in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh while the victim was on his way to a bank there to deposit the money.

A case has been registered on a complaint by salesman Tara Shanker Maitey, who works at a jewellery shop in Karol Bagh.

Mr. Maitey stated in the complaint that his employer Vibhas Jana had sent him to the bank around 3.30 p.m. to deposit ₹19 lakh. “I put the money in a bag and was walking towards the bank when three men suddenly asked me to stop,” he said in his complaint.

‘ID card’

A police officer said, “They introduced themselves as CBI officers and said they wanted to check the bag as the agency had received a tip-off. When Mr. Maitey refused to let them check the bag, one of them showed him an identity card. One man opened the bag while the others engaged him in a discussion.”

“They found cash in the bag and took it from Mr. Maitey. They asked him to show some documents and asked him several questions. The accused then left with the money,” the officer said. Mr. Maitey informed his employer about the incident.

Mr. Jana reached the spot immediately. Both of them started looking for the accused but in vain.

Case registered

Mr. Maitey and Mr. Jana later informed the police about the incident and filed a complaint.

“We have registered an FIR under IPC Section 420 [cheating] at Karol Bagh police station. The case is under investigation. We are scanning records of gangs booked earlier in connection with such frauds in the city. We are also procuring CCTV camera footage from the area,” said a senior police officer.
