A woman has been left in a serious condition following the crash.

A woman has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after a car and tractor collided in Taranaki.

Sergeant Andrew Stilton said the crash happened about 8.25am on Friday on Beaconsfield Rd, Stratford, and police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene.

The serious crash unit has been called and would determine the cause of the crash, he said.

The crash occurred near a sharp corner and Stilton said there was lots of ice on the road.

Diversions are in place around the scene as the road is closed.

A police central communications spokeswoman said the woman in her 40s, who had been travelling in the car as the sole occupant, had sustained serious injuries from the crash.

It is believed she was trapped for a time but police were not able to confirm whether she had yet been extracted from the vehicle. She was taken to hospital by St John ambulance.

The driver of the tractor was not taken to hospital.
