The organizers said that Women in Tourism Summit is a platform that serves as a strategic driver to promote gender equality and women empowerment.

The summit was organized to highlight the challenges and opportunities that exist for female tourism personnel in Ghana.

In Ghana, women are under-represented in the tourism sector like other key developmental sectors in Ghana. According to the UNWTO, women make up the majority of the tourism workforce in the maximum regions of the world and yet they are the lowest paid, holding the lowest status job in tourism. Many believe that the reason for this is that many women are not passionate about the business aspects of tourism and do not take active participation in it.

At the summit, most speakers spoke in favor of women empowerment in the tourism landscape.

Ghana Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs. Catherine Afeku said that the summit will promote women’s economic empowerment in tourism through a partnership with key stakeholders across the entire travel and tourism and hospitality value chains.

The summit brought together women game-changers, mission-driven companies and individuals, professionals and leaders in tourism.
