Sea erosion has been reported from Udyavar-Padukere and Marvanthe in Udupi district.
The threat owing to sea erosion is to the road which runs along the coastline at Udyavar-Padukere. This stretch at Udyavar-Padukere had been taken up under the shoreline protection project under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) scheme.
“The officers who would undertake shoreline protection project had been informed about it. They had visited the spot a few days back. They have started putting boulders to check sea erosion and protect the road at Kankod area in Udyvar from Thursday afternoon,” said Deputy Commissioner, Priyanka Mary Francis.
In case of Marvanthe, boulders had already been put to protect the fisheries road there, which was under threat from the sea erosion. But since the height of the sea wall, which had already constructed there, was lower than that of the road, the local people were demanding that its height be increased.
“But the sea wall was constructed as per the design and specifications given by the experts from Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune, only they would have to take a decision on design and height. We have informed the CWPRS and their team is expected to visit the spot soon,” said Ms. Francis.
Meanwhile, Udupi received a rainfall of 94.7 m.m. in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. Kundapur and Karkala received a rainfall of 54.2 m.m. and 83.2 m.m. respectively.
