There should a lot of intrigue as the first round of the NHL Draft unfolds Friday night in Dallas.

The Edmonton Oilers hold the 10th overall pick, but on Thursday, general manager Peter Chiarelli said they have had discussions about trading it for a current defenceman with offensive ability.

The Oilers could also trade the pick to move up higher in the first round.

“The sense that I got is after the first group of names, there’s kind of an equal group. That’s what our scouts tell us also. We’re in that equal group, kind of that next group. The moving up and moving down is kind of positional based for needs or for position, based on what I get from talking to other GMs,” explained Chiarelli.

“I think you’re going to get a good player. You’re going to get a good player at eight, nine, 10. That player may have in certain circumstances been taken at five, six, seven on one day, or at eight, nine, ten the next day. While there’s been a lot of talk about moving up or down, and we’ve talked about it, I don’t know necessarily if it will happen.”
