Chipotle announced on Thursday that it is experimenting with new menu items in its test kitchen in New York, according to several media outlets.

The new items, which aren't available at Chipotle restaurants, at least not yet, include a Mexican chocolate milkshake, avocado tostadas, nachos, quesadillas, a new salad, and a frozen margarita with grapefruit juice, agave syrup and "citrus juice," according to reports.

Chipotle is looking to expand the offerings to a wider group of stores as it tweaks the preparation process, the New York Times reported, as it's currently set up to offer only a basic menu quickly.

The Times also noted that the last time the chain rolled out a new product, queso, it didn't go over well initially.

Chipotle Research and Development Chef  Chad Brauze told Business Insider, "There will be a lot more fun stuff coming out," referred to "a whole repertoire coming out in 2018 and 2019" and said Chipotle is also exploring new dessert options.

The milkshake, Business Insider reported, will be slightly spicy, with hints of cardamon and chipotle chili. "I didn't want it to be McDonald's, I didn't want it to be the Frosty. I wanted it to be ours," Brauze was quoted as saying.

Chris Brandt, chipotle chief marketing officer, told CNBC, "Our goal is not to turn this into a fast-food type of enterprise; this brand has unique merits all its own ... I think we'll do some seasonal promotions, but I wouldn't characterize this as limited time offerings one after the other; that's not where we want to go."
