ALLAHABAD: Looking for a way to crack down on allegations of policemen asking for bribes and misbehaving with the public, traffic police officials would now be armed with card swipe machines to collect fine from commuters violating rules in the city.

Traffic policemen with card swipe machines would be stationed at 25 locations in Allahabad in the first phase so that people could pay for the fine using their debit or credit cards. One could spot policemen carrying these machines at Civil Lines and Colonelganj on Friday.

If the scheme is successful, more traffic policemen would be provided with these machines for fine collection.

SP (traffic) Kuldeep Singh, said, “The department has decided to deploy traffic policemen with card swiping machines at 25 spots including offices of senior police officials as part of a pilot project.”

Singh said, “The traffic police department would be covering other important crossings and intersections in the next phases.”

He added that rule violators will have to pay the fine in cash where the facility of card swipe machines was not available.

A commuter spotted violating traffic rules would be given a challan and the he/she can pay the fine either in cash or by swiping their debit or credit card through the machine.

Police said that on an average, over 400 cases of traffic violations are reported in Allahabad each day.
