NEW DELHI: An all-party meet to discuss the situation in the wake of the implementation of governor's rule in the state is currently underway in Srinagar

Jammu and Kashmir was placed under governor's rule on Wednesday, a day after the PDP-BJP government collapsed as the BJP snapped its three-year-old alliance with the regional party citing "larger national interest" and "deteriorating security situation".

The governor also placed the legislative assembly in suspended animation till the proclamation of governor's rule is revoked or varied by a subsequent proclamation, according to a gazette notification. The six-year term of the current assembly ends in March 2021.

Vohra's own tenure comes to an end on June 25 but he is expected to continue until further orders.

Recognised as an official who knows the pulse of the state, he has been a trusted man on Kashmir for several prime ministers across the political spectrum - Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Manmohan Singh and now Narendra Modi.

The 1959 batch Punjab cadre IAS officer has remained the choice of the Central government, irrespective of which party was in power due to his knowledge, expertise and negotiation skills. He has seen Jammu and Kashmir through its worst crises, including the Amarnath agitation row in 2008.

In 2003, following then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee's fervent appeal of "Kashmiriyat, Insaniyat and Jamhooriyat", the BJP-led NDA government homed in on Vohra to be its interlocutor in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Manmohan Singh government, which came into power in 2004, continued with him in the job due to his grasp and negotiating talent.

In 2008, he was appointed governor of the state by the UPA government and was reappointed in 2013. During his stint in Jammu and Kashmir, Governor's rule was imposed in 2008, 2014, 2016 and now.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this report had said that the meeting has been cancelled by J&K governor NN Vohra. However, the information was found to be incorrect. We regret the error.
