Only 8,000 LED street lights of the one lakh that were to be fitted in east Delhi by August have been installed so far, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) Commissioner said on Thursday.
The issue came up when Standing Committee members raised concerns about the slow pace of work and poor quality of lights installed so far. The panel was informed that the lights installed were found to be of lower wattage compared to previous ones.
On the issue of delay, the Commissioner said the company that had been given the tender for the project was having problems in getting loans for its funding approved. Under the terms of the contract, the company will be fined 0.05% of the contract value for each day of delay.
A panel member claimed the LED street lights installed in his area failed to work despite being changed twice.
The Commissioner also said that a third party agency had been roped in to undertake an inspection of deficiencies. He told the panel that 700 lights will be installed daily from now.
