Federer is warming up for Wimbledon next month and after returning to world No 1 last Sunday with victory over Milos Raonic in the Stuttgart Open final.
The Swiss legend is aiming to win his 10th title in Halle, Germany, where it has been like a home away from home.
And ahead of his second round encounter with Benoit Paire tomorrow (9am UK time), Federer has explained why he’s such a big fan of Halle compared to Stuttgart, where previously his best showing was a semi-final appearance.
“This is an easier court to play than last week in Stuttgart,” he said.

“The ball bounces up higher into my strike zone. I was connecting well on returns and I could read his serve.
“I played a solid first set once I figured out how to break him.
“In the second I was able to hold all of my serves. For a first round and without much play on this court, it was fine, I'm very happy.”
Federer has also explained why he’s eager to win again in Halle, adding: “I am here to defend my title.
“I’ve enjoyed too much success here to say, ‘Quarter-finals is my goal.’
“I feel like that would be not true to myself.
“I’m a winner and if I’m here in Halle, I’m here to win. I’ve got to take it one step at a time.”
