The coin was minted in 2016 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth.

The coin was designed by Emma Noble and pays homage to the adventurous hero of Beatrix Potter’s first book, Peter Rabbit.

It incorporates colour printing, reflecting the watercolour style of the original illustrations.

The coin has “Peter Rabbit” etched on it and is presented in a modern perspex block with a booklet inspired by Beatrix’s own illustrations.

Along with the Peter Rabbit 50p, coins featuring Jemima and Mrs Tiggy-winke were also created by the Royal Mint, but it was the Peter Rabbit coin that made bank this morning.

It seems the coin is in high demand, with Royal Mint listing the coin as “no longer available”.

Originally selling on the official currency website for £55, purchases were limited to only five per-household due to “overwhelming demand”.

Yesterday, another rare 50p coin was sold on eBay for much more than its face value, a Kew Gardens coin that fetched an impressive £220
