Costa’s lucky goal hands Spain 1-0 victory over Iran

Diego Costa had luck by his side on Wednesday as he found himself unpunished in the first half for an altercation with Iran’s goalkeeper and then scored a goal without meaning to in the second half. After Andres Iniesta had found him with a neatly threaded pass, Costa’s shot hit the defender, rebounded on his knee and then found the back of the net to give Spain three points against Iran.

Portugal and Spain now lead Group B with four points, while Morocco are out of the reckoning following their 1-0 loss to Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo had scored the only goal of the game.

Suarez scores in 100th appearance

There was another 1-0 result on Wednesday that sealed the fate of all four teams in Group A. Luis Suarez, playing his 100th game for Uruguay, scored off a corner in their victory against Saudi Arabia. Uruguay and hosts Russia are guaranteed a place in the knock-out stages with six points, while Egypt and Saudi Arabia are out.
