Giving Taranaki a voice with TEDxNew Plymouth

Adrian Sole, Eve Kawana-Brown, and Antony Rhodes are organising TEDxNew Plymouth, an event for local people to share their expertise and inspire people in 18 minutes or less.
A group of Taranaki people are trying to give the region a voice by bringing a global speaking event to New Plymouth.
Adrian Sole, Eve Kawana-Brown, and Antony Rhodes are organising TEDxNew Plymouth, an event for local people to share their expertise and inspire people in 18 minutes or less.
"New Plymouth is a progressive and innovative city so we wanted to see a TEDx talk here to support that," Sole said.

They have a strict criteria to follow including only 100 people can attend and they can't have speakers that have previously done a TEDx event.
"We've gone through the process to see what amazing speakers we have here that can start conversations that would challenge people's thinking."

TED talks began in 1984 by Richard Wurman and Harry Marks as a conference around technology, entertainment and design.

There will be nine speakers at the event including researcher and growth architect Adnan Belushi, sustainability business owner Jane Dunlop, and 12-year-old founding member of Nakibots Connor Eagar.
There are now TED talks hosted all around the world, viewed online by millions of people.
"TEDx is an independently organised version which have some of the greatest thinkers you know like Richard Branson and Bill Gates and people of that sort of level," Rhodes said.
"It's been a really cool voyage of discovery in terms of discovering who is around, what they are doing, and what people are passionate about."
The aim of bringing the event to New Plymouth is to share local voices on a global level.

"If they've got a great story and it's of interest this is a terrific platform for them, not just to the 100 tickets because these are all videoed and eventually on the TEDx site so a whole international marketplace gets a chance to hear it," Sole said.
"It is about local people getting a voice and getting to share that with the wider community," Kawana-Brown added.
"We cast the net and just started to reach out to people and feel like we've just scratched the surface of who could be interesting."

"Some they'll find challenging, some they'll call b......t, but that's ok, that's what it's about and I think anyone that buys a TEDx ticket knows that," Sole said.
"They would have watched the videos and been inspired or been challenged by some of the previous ones and now it's our take at a local level to do that."
TEDxNew Plymouth takes place July 22 at 4th Wall Theatre. Tickets are available at the theatre's box office.
