Port Orange pro drops out of top 20, misses spot in PGA Championship

A triple-bogey on the front nine and four straight bogeys on the back led to a final-round 79 for Rod Perry in the PGA’s national professional championship Wednesday in Seaside, California.

Perry dropped from a tie for third after 54 holes to 30th at Seaside’s Bayonet Course. He had rounds of 71-70-73-79.

The top-20 finishers from the annual “club pro” championship earn berths in this summer’s PGA Championship. Perry, head pro at Crane Lakes Golf Club in Port Orange, won the national championship in 2013 and finished in the top 20 four other times.

Nebraska pro Ryan Vermeer finished at 5 under for a two-stroke victory. The director of instruction at Omaha’s Happy Hollow Club had rounds of 70-70-70-73.
