Pedestrians forced to walk along the middle of the road; stretch between Statue Junction and Kizhakkekota not restored

Thripunithura residents, grappling with choked roads and traffic snarls, now have to deal with potholes as well.

The stretch between Statue Junction and Kizhakkekota, dug up more than a couple of months ago to lay a water pipeline, has not been restored a month after the work has been completed. According to Municipal Chairperson R. Chandrika Devi, the tender for the road work was delayed because it could be floated only after the pipeline work was over. The contract was awarded and work would begin on July 14, she said.

All vehicles moving to the eastern side of Thripunithura from Statue Junction have to negotiate the broken road.

One side of the busy Eroor Road from S.N. Junction was dug up more than a month ago to lay KSEB cables. Though the work has been completed and the dug-up trench filled up, road re-building process is yet to begin. With the monsoon in full flow, the road has turned slushy and pedestrians are forced to walk along the middle of the road.

According to the KSEB official in charge of the work, ₹90 lakh was deposited with the Public Works Department for road restoration before the cable-laying work was launched.

The work was completed by May 30, and the PWD was informed of the same.

Residents in the area had raised concerns about permitting the digging up of the roads just before the rains.

It was learnt that the road restoration work was tendered but could not be executed because of the early onset of the monsoon.
