The number of refugees worldwide registered an annual increase of 13% to reach 25.4 million in 2017, the highest known total to date, according to a UNHCR report.
Most of the refugees were from Syria and Afghanistan, while neighbouring Turkey and Pakistan hosted the most number of refugees.
If internal displacement figures were considered, one person was displaced every two seconds on average, the report said.
In the year 2017, displacements were due to a crisis in Democratic Republic of the Congo, the war in South Sudan and the flight of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.
