The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is hosting a number of events in Vienna this week, but the meetings set for Friday and Saturday are expected to yield decisions on crude production that could shake up the oil market.
The oil market would normally hear a decision, and typically react, on the same day as the meeting of OPEC members, which is set for this Friday, “but this time could be different ,” said Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at Price Futures Group. A separate meeting of OPEC members and nonmembers, led by Russia, will be held Saturday.
“I think we should get the news potentially later because Iran is putting up a major stink about an increase” in production, he said. “If the conflict blows up, we may see the negotiations go into overtime: into the non-OPEC meeting Saturday.”
Iran’s oil minister said Tuesday that he does not believe there will be an agreement at the OPEC meeting, according to tweets from several reporters in Vienna.
Expectations that OPEC and its allies will agree to at least curb the production cuts that have been in place since the start of 2017 have pressured oil prices in recent days.
Early Thursday, Saudi Arabia’s energy minister, Khalid al-Falih, reiterated calls for higher production targets, saying OPEC has to meet the needs of the market. He acknowledged, however, that some members won’t be able to increase their output.
August West Texas Intermediate crude the U.S. benchmark, settled at $65.71 a barrel on Wednesday and August Brent crude finished at $74.74 a barrel. Month to date, WTI traded around 1% lower, while Brent has lost roughly 4%.
