June 19 - 23, 2018, The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, FL
Concordia Care, Inc. (Concordia), a specialty risk-transfer and care coordination company, announces its presentation, “Effective Patient-Centered Treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Impacts Work Performance,” will be featured at the 43rd Annual Florida RIMS Educational Conference, Friday, June 22, 10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. EDT. Concordia Care presenters Alana Letourneau, M.D., MBA, vice president, Clinical Program Strategy, and David Vittoria, LCSW, MCAP, ICADC, NCAC II, vice president, Clinical Services, will provide documentation of its effective approach for addressing issues related to injured workers who report symptoms consistent with PTSD.
On March 28, 2018, The Florida State Senate acknowledged PTSD as an occupational disease through its passing of Senate Bill 376. The bill provides for workers’ compensation benefits for first responders experiencing PTSD effective October 1, 2018.
“There is a strong correlation between chronic pain and mental health which significantly impacts an injured worker's ability to recover,” says Vittoria. “We see a high prevalence of symptoms of depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder in injured workers, especially those experiencing a delay in recovery.”
“Research suggests that pain and PTSD activate overlapping brain areas, further leading to a decrease in physical health,” says Dr. Letourneau. “A study confirms that approximately one-third of injured workers with chronic pain due to upper extremity injury can experience PTSD.”
In a workers compensation benchmarking study, including data from 1200 claims leaders, the number one barrier to achieving recovery is psychosocial, including mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and PTSD.
Vittoria adds, “We are pleased to be presenting at the Florida RIMS conference to share our perspectives and experience with Concordia’s biopsychosocial model of care in helping to improve health outcomes in injured workers with PTSD.”
