PANAJI: Wednesday recorded heavy rainfall during the third wettest 24-hour spell of the season. Leading the way was Mapusa with 217mm rainfall recorded till Thursday morning, followed by Pernem and Panaji.

Except for Quepem, Sanguem and Canacona, all areas received ‘heavy to very rainfall’ on Wednesday. The heavy rain that lashed Panaji saw the temperature drop to 27.5C, over two degrees below normal for the season.

Parts of Mapusa were flooded, especially the low-lying khazan and cultivable areas. “The extremely heavy rainfall of 217mm is the highest recorded by any centre this season so far,” M L Sahu, director, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Panaji said.

Pernem and Panaji witnessed 165.2mm and 155mm rainfall, while, Mormugao, which recorded a rainfall of 112.2mm, was the other region to experience a heavy downpour.

“A few spells of rain/thundershower, at times heavy,” has been forecast for Panaji and its neighbourhood till Saturday. Rain and thundershower is very likely to occur at most places across North and South Goa.

The copious rainfall took the seasonal total to 740.8mm, as against the normal of 563.7mm, giving the state a healthy surplus of 31%.

Though the rainfall was meagre for most of Thursday, the IMD did not withdraw its red alert, which will remain valid till late June 21 night. From Friday onwards, heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places in North and South Goa has been forecast, which means the likelihood of receiving between 64.5mm to 204mm of rainfall.

Rough sea and high waves are expected till 11am on Friday. Sakhali, Old Goa, Margao and Dabolim received between 86mm and 92mm of rainfall on Wednesday. Canacona, at just 7.2mm, escaped the downpour.
