BENGALURU: The Ashoknagar police have arrested an office assistant and a driver in connection with the theft of `15 lakh cash from the Bescom office.

The accused have been identified as Saleem Ali (28), an office assistant at the Bescom office and a resident of Siddapura in Jayanagar, and Raghavendra Rathod alias Raghu (27), a driver at the Bescom office, who hails from Sindhanur in Raichur district.

Police said that `15.62 lakh was stolen from the Bescom office located at Subbanna Garden on Hosur Road, on June 12. Initially, the suspicion was on the those who had collected the cash. They were questioned and their involvement was ruled out. But Ali and Rathod stopped coming to office, raising suspicion about their involvement. When they were traced and nabbed, they confessed to have committed the theft.

“While the other staffers had gone out for tea break, Ali stole the money and gave it to the driver. He was acting innocent when the police visited the spot. We have recovered cash `11 lakh from the duo,” police added.
