Jes Maria Benny has had a rather simple mantra for success — hard work and systematic study.

So, it was not surprising for her family members and well-wishers when the girl from Angamaly, near here, emerged top in the State medical entrance test, the results of which were declared on Wednesday. The young talent had send out early signals of a remarkable performance in store after she bagged the 56th rank in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET 2018) for admission to medical and dental colleges.

“Before the NEET results, I did not have much expectations about topping the State entrance test. However, my teachers were confident that I would make it to the top after seeing my performance in NEET,” said Jes Maria from her home near Little Flower Hospital in Angamaly.

Daughter of Benny John, a loco pilot with Railways at Shornur, and Jazeentha K.O., a teacher at St. Joseph’s Girls’ High School, Chengal, near Kalady here, Jes Maria hopes that she would be able to join Government Medical College, Kozhikode, for her MBSS programme.

Asked why she wanted to become a doctor, Jes Maria said she had heard a lot, especially from her parents, about the greatness of the profession.

“I would like to take up oncology as my specialisation. Research is also another area that I would like to pursue,” she said. A former Plus Two student of St. Antony’s Public School at Kanjirapally, Jes Maria’s other interests include drawing, craft and quiz.

On her tips for future aspirants, the medical entrance topper said that one should attempt maximum trial question papers as part of the preparations. “We should also clear our doubts regularly,” she said.
