WA police have found a body believed to be that of missing dementia sufferer Ian Collett.

The body was located this morning in bushland along Albany Highway in Ashendon, south-east of Perth.

Albany Highway has been closed to small vehicles while police examine the area close to where the body was located.

Mr Collett, 65, disappeared from his Canning Vale home on May 19, and an extensive search lasting almost two weeks failed to locate him.

A huge search effort ran for weeks after his disappearance and included hundreds of police, SES volunteers and community members.

Severe weather hampered search

When Mr Collett walked out of his front door just before noon on a Saturday in May, it was a beautiful, sunny day.

But since then Perth has been pummelled by three serious storms and seen temperatures plummet as winter kicks in.

Mr Collett was recorded on CCTV at 3:50pm on Abernathy Road in Byford. The last sighting of him was 40 kilometres away on Albany Highway in Mount Cooke, south of Armadale, at midnight on May 19.

Police had feared he may have tried to hitchhike to Mt Barker, in WA's south.

But the body was located closer to the city, in bushland along Albany Highway near Hakea Road in Ashendon, about 25 kilometres from his last sighting.

Police are due to provide more details this afternoon.
