PUNE: A 57-year-old woman, resident of Satara, got new lease of life after doctors successfully removed a huge tumour weighing 14.5 kg from her abodmen recently.

The woman had been suffering from some sort of discomfort in her stomach since last year. However, due to financial constraints she couldn’t afford to visit the doctor and undergo proper treatment.

She was detected with the tumour during an awareness and free health check up campaign in Satara. Later, a team of doctors from Onco-Life Cancer Centre in Satara performed the surgery.

"The tumour had grown so huge that it was putting pressure on other organs. It was compressing on all structures in her abdomen including her lungs, liver, food pipe. Due to which she always had bloat feeling and breathing issues. After examining her we operated immediately without damaging the vital organs and their blood supply. This required precise dissection of the tumour separation from liver and its blood supply, intestine and other organs," said hospital's senior onco-surgeon Manoj Lokhande.

The surgery was challenging. "Because the most complex part of the surgery was separating tumor from veins and aorta without blood loss or damaging these structures. As per our information, this is the largest cancerous tumour removed till now within two hours," Lokhande said.

Medical expert Pratapraje Mahadik, Director of Onco Life Cancer Centre said, "For those who are financially weak and cannot afford the treatment, I suggest them to take treatment through Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana which is a state government sponsored health scheme for the poor"
