Porsche Reveals What Makes The New 911 GT3 RS Such A Weapon

In theory, the new 911 GT3 RS shouldn’t be that much faster around a track than its predecessor. After all, it only has 20hp more, coming from an updated 4.0-liter flat six engine that now revs up to 9,000rpm.

But the practice says otherwise – and that’s where Porsche’s magic comes into the light.

The company’s engineering team and test drivers give us an overview of what’s changed in order to make the world-beating sports car even better where it matters the most: the race track.

The new 991.2 GT3 RS managed to lap the Nurburgring in a stunning 6:56.4, becoming the company’s third model to drop under the 7-minute mark after the 918 Spyder and the 911 GT2 RS. More importantly, the new model is a whopping 24 seconds faster than its predecessor. That’s not a typo: it’s indeed twenty four seconds faster.

Changes over the last GT3 RS include a rose-jointed suspension with firmer springs, a significantly revised aero agenda for increased downforce with the front fascia featuring air ducts from the GT2 RS, and stickier tires wrapped in 20-inch and 21-inch lightweight wheels.

Lightweight door panels and glass for the rear windows are also present, while the Clubsport package that can be selected for no additional cost adds a roll cage, six-point harnesses and a fire extinguisher.

All these details, and countless more, are there to make the Porsche 911 GT3 RS one of the rawest, most exciting cars to drive on the planet.
