Fifth liver transplant in city, organs donated at Amravati

Nagpur: City witnessed its fifth liver transplant on Saturday after a 16-year-old patient’s family donated liver, kidneys and eyes at Amravati’s Radiant Hospital. This was the 19th liver donation from city and the region.
The liver transplant was performed at New Era Hospital by Dr Rahul Saxena and Dr Somnath Chatopadhay. The organ donation took place on Friday night and the organs reached Nagpur on Saturday morning. The transplant surgery of liver ended at 3.30am. One kidney went to Orange City Hospital and Research Institute and the other went to a patient in the Wockhardt Hospital. The corneas went to Harina Netra Pedhi at Amravati.

Amravati’s Radiant Hospital, where the organs were donated at, is a Non Transplant Organ Retrieval Centre (NTORC) and has been doing good work of promotion of organ donation. The team which retrieved the organs included Dr Sikandar Adwani, Dr Anand B Kakani, Dr Pawan Agrawal and intensivist Dr Mangesh Bhongade.

Family of the donor, an accident victim named Pranav Sunilrao Andhare, was more than willing to donate all organs after which the zonal transplant coordination committee (ZTCC) sent an alert to authorities at state, region and national level. There was a recipient at Kolkata but logistics didn’t permit transportation of the organ and the transplant in the required time frame.

The entire process was coordinated by the president and secretary of the ZTCC Dr Vidbhwari Dani and Dr Ravi Wankhede respectively. Veena Wathore coordinated the organ donation.

A green corridor was created with the support of Amravati and Nagpur police. The team included PSI Ashwini Mahajan, ACP Jameel Ahmed, PSI Abbarao Mendhe, ASI Ashok Tiwari, Nitin Dubbalawar, Pravin Garkal, Praful Bangde, Saraswati KOndawate, ASI Ramlal Singh Thakur and ASI Janardhan Kale and Anil Parmar.
