Besides the International Day for Yoga, June 21 is also celebrated as World Giraffe Day. The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) initiated the idea to hold the celebration on the longest day of the year (June 21 every year).

The Mysuru zoo is celebrating the day in a befitting manner. It is planning to display information boards and fun facts about giraffes in front of their enclosure at the entrance of the zoo on Thursday.

The zoo management has asked visitors and giraffe enthusiasts to make use of the opportunity.

Giraffe, a zoo press release said, is listed as vulnerable to extinction on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) Red List of Threatened Species. Giraffe numbers in Africa have declined by at least 40 per cent over the last 30 years.

The World Giraffe Day is meant to raise support, create awareness and provide a deeper understanding of the challenges that these animals face in the wild, the release added.
