Rajkot: The son of an former MLA, who is the incumbent BJP president of Devbhoomi Dwarka district, attacked a police constable, breaking his nose in Khambhalia on Wednesday evening.
Police identified the accused as Prabhat Chawda, son of former BJP MLA Kalu Chawda, and the victim as Virpal Luna, constable with Khambhalia police station.

The incident occurred when Luna stopped Chawda, who was driving his bike while talking on his cellphone. As using cellphone while driving amounts to violation traffic norms, Luna asked Chawda to pay the fine. Chawda tried to throw his weight around, mentioning his father’s name. This resulted in an altercation between the two, following which Chawda attacked Luna, raining him with punches and fracturing his nose.

“We have booked Chawda for preventing a policeman from performing his duty, threatening him and attacking and injuring him. While Luna has been admitted to Khambhalia Civil Hospital, a manhunt has been launched for Chawda who absconded after committing the crime,” said an official from Khambalia police station.
